Sodium Minecraft Mod: Download and Install Guide (26.3)

Sodium is the performance mod most players install first. It replaces the way Minecraft renders the world, which gives you more frames and less micro-stutter, while the game still looks like Minecraft. When Minecraft 26.3 changed a lot under the hood, Sodium was ready on day one: version 0.9.2 for 26.3 came out on September 15, 2026, the same day as the update.

What Sodium actually does

Minecraft’s own renderer leaves a lot of performance on the table. Sodium rebuilds how the game draws the world, and by default it simply turns on every optimization your system supports. You don’t need to configure anything.

The developers say it can often improve frame rates by 300% or more. How much you actually gain depends on your hardware: their own comparisons were made on a computer with integrated graphics, which they consider typical for the casual player.

It also fixes graphical issues the game has had for years:

• Smoother biome blending with gradients across each block instead of hard steps.
• Smooth lighting on fluids like water and lava.
• Cleaner block shading with more consistent shadows.
• Better smooth lighting underwater.

What’s new in Sodium 0.9

Sodium 0.9 moved all of its rendering onto Mojang’s Blaze3D and added asynchronous occlusion culling: the check for which parts of the world the camera can’t see, and therefore don’t need to be drawn, now runs in the background. It’s also the first Sodium that can run on Vulkan: an experimental option under Graphics API in your Video Settings.

How to install Sodium

1. Pick your loader. The developers recommend Fabric Loader, NeoForge works too. Most third-party launchers can install a loader for you.
2. Download Sodium for 26.3. On Modrinth or CurseForge, filter by Minecraft 26.3 and your loader. Version 0.9.2 is the current stable release, newer alpha builds are for testers.
3. Drop it into your mods folder. That’s .minecraft/mods for the vanilla launcher, or your instance’s mods folder in Prism, the CurseForge app or the Modrinth App. No other mods are required.
4. Check that it works. Open Video Settings in game: if you see Sodium’s new settings screen, you’re done.

Your graphics card needs up-to-date drivers with OpenGL 4.5 support. That covers most cards from the last twelve years, including Intel HD Graphics 500 Series, NVIDIA GeForce 400 Series and AMD Radeon HD 7000 Series or newer. Android devices that run Minecraft through OpenGL translation layers are not supported.

Want even more performance?

By design, Sodium only optimizes rendering. For the rest of the game, add Lithium (game logic, also available for 26.3 on Fabric and NeoForge). For shaders, install Iris, which runs on top of Sodium and is available for Fabric on 26.3.

Sodium is made by the CaffeineMC team and licensed under Polyform Shield 1.0.0: the source is open to read on GitHub, but it isn’t an OSI open-source license. Bugs go to the issue tracker there, together with your mod list and log files.
