Mods of the Month #1: October 2026
The best new Minecraft mods of October 2026 (26.3), ranked
Nine Fabric mods got their first stable release for Minecraft 26.3 in October 2026. I put all nine into the same world, tested every one, and ranked them from 9 to 1.

Nine Minecraft mods got their first stable release for 26.3 in October 2026. I put all nine into the same world, tested every one in real gameplay, and ranked them from 9 to 1. Number one is the mod I would install first.
Download counts are from Modrinth on 26 October 2026.
#9 ReplayMod
While you play, ReplayMod records everything around you. Afterwards you open the recording and fly a free camera through it, like a film set. It’s the tool behind a lot of cinematic Minecraft shots, so if you build and want to show it off, this is it. In plain survival it mostly sits there with a red dot in the corner. Over 19 million downloads. Download on Modrinth
#8 Sounds
Over 170 new sound effects for menus, items and blocks, plus fixes for the ones that never quite fit: chests, your inventory, items landing. Highly configurable, with good defaults. Over 20 million downloads. Download on Modrinth
#7 Subtle Effects
Small particle details vanilla is missing: campfires throw sparks, glowstone and redstone blocks dust the air, candles flicker and slimes leave a little trail. Every effect can be turned off on its own, and it skips particles you can’t see. Download on Modrinth
#6 Diorama
Brand new this month. Your minimap and world map are drawn at an angle, like a model of your world on a table: towers stand up, cliffs have faces and trees cast shadows. Only a few weeks old, so expect rough edges. Around 36,000 downloads so far. Download on Modrinth
#5 Freecam
Press a key (F4 by default) and your camera leaves your body. Your player stays put while you fly anywhere, even through walls. Great for planning builds, but a lot of servers don’t allow it. Over 23 million downloads. Download on Modrinth
#4 Hoverboards
Seventeen rideable boards that float up to five blocks above the ground, with their own sounds and glowing beams from the engines. It needs GeckoLib, and the download page doesn’t make that obvious, so grab both. Not useful, pure fun. Under 3,000 downloads. Download on Modrinth
#3 Reworked Keep Inventory
When you die you keep your armor, weapons and tools; everything else goes into an Allay with a chest, waiting where you died. Your gear loses durability and you lose half your experience (configurable). The fair middle between vanilla and keep inventory on. About 2,000 downloads. Download on Modrinth
#2 JEI (Just Enough Items)
Finally on 26.3. Open your inventory and every item in the game is listed on the right. Type a name and the list filters instantly; point at an item and press R for the recipe. A must-have as soon as you play with other mods. Over 86 million downloads on Modrinth alone. Download on Modrinth
#1 Friends & Foes
The mobs that lost the mob vote, and a few Mojang forgot: the Moobloom, a flower cow that leaves a trail of flowers and gets along with bees; the Glare from the lush caves, which shows you dark spots where monsters can spawn; the Wildfire, a fire boss with four shields that calls in blazes; the Crab, whose claw brews a potion for extra reach; and the Iceologer in a small spruce cabin in the snow. Over 12 million downloads, now on 26.3, and my number one this month. Download on Modrinth
How I tested
All nine mods ran together in Minecraft Java 26.3 on Fabric, in a copy of my world Valley of Mods, with the first stable 26.3 release of each mod. Mobs, items and test builds were placed with commands for the shots, and the vanilla comparisons show the same spot without the mod. New to mods? Start with how to install Fabric mods on 26.3. For the bigger picture, see every Minecraft 26.3 mod I tested, ranked.

FAQ
How did you pick the mods?
Every mod on the list got its first stable Fabric release (not a beta) for Minecraft 26.3 on Modrinth in October 2026. Some are brand new, like Diorama, Hoverboards and Reworked Keep Inventory; others are big names that only now arrived on 26.3, like JEI and ReplayMod.
Do all nine mods work together?
Yes. I ran all nine at the same time in one world on Minecraft 26.3 with Fabric. Hoverboards additionally needs GeckoLib, which its download page doesn’t list as a requirement.
Which mods do I need on a server?
Modrinth lists Friends & Foes and Hoverboards as required on the server and on every client. Reworked Keep Inventory only has to be on the server. JEI works on either side. Freecam, Diorama, Sounds and ReplayMod are client-side only, and Subtle Effects runs on the client with an optional server part. Many servers don’t allow Freecam, so check the rules first.
Will there be a list next month?
Yes. Mods of the Month is a monthly series: every month I test the mods that got their first stable release for the current Minecraft version and rank them.
