The Sift Mod: Portal Guide, Download and Install (26.3)
How to enter The Sift in Minecraft 26.3: the new dimension as a mod
Mojang's new dimension The Sift arrives in 2027. Mielon's The Sift lets you play a fan-made version of it today. We opened the portal in our own world, step by step: goat horn, Singer, eight note blocks and the order 1-3-7-6-5-2-4-8.
Tested on Minecraft 26.3 (Fabric), The Sift 1.1.2, October 19, 2026, with GeckoLib 5.5.7 (Fabric), a fresh Ancient City in a copy of my world Valley of Mods. How I test

The Sift is the new dimension Mojang showed at Minecraft LIVE on September 26, 2026: the first new dimension in over 14 years, coming to Java and Bedrock in 2027. Until then, there’s Mielon’s The Sift, a fan-made mod with over 400,000 downloads on Modrinth. The author says it plainly: it isn’t an exact replica, it’s his own take based on the trailers. We installed version 1.1.2 on Minecraft 26.3, found a fresh Ancient City in a copy of our world Valley of Mods and opened the portal, step by step. My short verdict: big, strange and fun, with a portal ritual that’s worth doing yourself, as long as you remember it’s a fan version, not the real update.

How to install The Sift on Minecraft 26.3
- Install Fabric for Minecraft 26.3 (Fabric Loader 0.19.3 or newer) and Fabric API. On 26.3 the game needs Java 25. New to Fabric? My Fabric install guide has every step.
- Download Mielon’s The Sift 1.1.2 for Fabric 26.3 from the official Modrinth page.
- Download GeckoLib for Fabric 26.3 yourself from Modrinth. The project page says 5.5.3 or newer, but Fabric’s own check asks for 5.5.6 or later, so take the newest Fabric build (5.5.7 on October 22, 2026, the one I used). This is the trap: the mod’s Fabric file points to the NeoForge build of GeckoLib, so a launcher that resolves dependencies on its own picks the wrong file, and the game won’t start. More about the library: GeckoLib.
- Optional: LambDynamicLights lets glowing creatures like the Singer light up their surroundings.
- Put all files into your mods folder and start the game. The mod has to be on the server too.
Step 1: Find an Ancient City
The portal is in the center of an Ancient City, deep underground in the Deep Dark. The mod builds its own version of the city center when the city generates, so look for one in chunks you haven’t loaded before. Right in front of the giant frame are eight new blocks: Sonorous Deepslate.
Step 2: Play a goat horn
Stand in the middle of the eight blocks and play a goat horn. A Singer appears on top of the frame, sings, and its song wakes the Sonorous Deepslate. Mind the sculk shriekers around the city center, the Warden is still home.
Step 3: Tune eight note blocks
Put a note block on each Sonorous Deepslate. A right click changes the note: one to eight. In our world, the first block stayed on 1, the second got one right click for 2, and so on up to 8.
Step 4: Play the order 1-3-7-6-5-2-4-8
Hit the note blocks with left clicks in this order: 1, 3, 7, 6, 5, 2, 4, 8. Where they stand doesn’t matter, only the order. If it’s right, the deepslate plays the melody back, colored beams shoot up from all eight blocks, and the frame fills with a cloudy sky. Step through, and you’re in The Sift.
What’s in The Sift
- The dimension: siftslate as its main stone, ten biomes from overgrown forests and siftslate peaks to snowy Ichor peaks and a deep dark of its own, an animated sky and its own weather. Coordinates match the Overworld 1:1, and beds work.
- Ichor: a liquid that gives you Regeneration when you touch it, but slows you down. You can scoop it up with a bucket or a bottle.
- Sifters: fast hunters in the overgrown forests, alone or in packs of up to five.
- Blub: a small, neutral creature. Hold out a Soul Block for a one in three chance to tame it.
- Echo Golem: searches the Soul Canyons for Soul Blocks. Give it an echo shard, and it brings them to you.
- Dark Sniffer: a sniffer that digs in sculk turns into one. Even the Warden leaves it alone.
- Siftite: the upgrade for netherite at the smithing table. Its tools are 20% faster than netherite, and your Siftite gear comes back to you after you die.
- Charoite: replaces lapis in the enchanting table. It costs 20 more levels, but every enchantment above level I comes out one level higher.
- Rifts: temporary tears between The Sift and the Overworld, open for five minutes. Players, mobs and items can pass through.
Where the loot is
Abandoned portals in The Sift hold the good stuff. According to the mod’s loot tables, they can contain Charoite, diamonds and Siftite nuggets, the music disc “Rift” (50 % chance) and the Siftite Upgrade Smithing Template (40 % chance), which you need to turn netherite into Siftite. The dimension also has its own ores in siftslate: coal, diamond, emerald, Charoite and Siftite.
Two catches from the mod’s data: Charoite-enchanted items can’t be combined in an anvil afterwards, and a sniffer only turns into a Dark Sniffer after about 30 seconds in sculk. A Mini Rift brings your Siftite gear back after you die.
What I saw in my test
- The portal worked as described. I generated a fresh Ancient City with the mod installed, and its center had the frame and the eight Sonorous Deepslate. After the goat horn, the Singer appeared on top of the frame, and the order 1-3-7-6-5-2-4-8 opened the portal.
- Ichor lakes drain. The Ichor lakes I found emptied themselves shortly after the area loaded, because Ichor has no endless sources and flows down into the caves below. To film it, I poured Ichor from a bucket onto flat ground, where it spread wide and shimmered cyan and magenta, then scooped it back up with an empty bucket.
- Don’t stand in Ichor. With my feet in Ichor, the screen turned almost black and brown.
- No Warden in The Sift. I tried to summon a Warden there with a command twice, and none appeared. I don’t know why, so take it as an observation, not a rule.
- Even I hit the GeckoLib trap. My own install stopped on Fabric Loader 0.19.5 with “requires version 5.5.6 or later of geckolib, which is missing”. Swapping the NeoForge GeckoLib file for the Fabric build fixed it.
Compatibility
- Loaders and versions: version 1.1.2 exists for Fabric on Minecraft 26.3 and 26.2 and for NeoForge on 1.21.1; there is also a Forge version for 1.20.1. On 26.3 there is only the Fabric version.
- Requirements on 26.3: Fabric API and GeckoLib (Fabric build), Java 25. LambDynamicLights is optional and lets glowing creatures like the Singer light up their surroundings.
- Server: the mod adds a dimension, blocks and mobs, so it has to be installed on the server and on every player’s game, together with GeckoLib.
- Worlds: only Ancient Cities that generate after you install the mod get the portal. Explore new chunks for one.
Troubleshooting
- “requires version 5.5.6 or later of geckolib, which is missing”: you have the NeoForge build of GeckoLib or none at all. Remove it and put the Fabric 26.3 build of GeckoLib in your mods folder.
- The Ancient City has no portal frame: the city was generated before you installed the mod. Find a city in chunks you haven’t visited yet.
- The note blocks don’t open anything: blow the goat horn first, in the middle of the eight blocks, so the Singer wakes them. Then tune the note blocks with right clicks and play them with left clicks; only the order of your clicks counts, not where each note stands.
- The game won’t start at all: check Fabric Loader 0.19.3 or newer, Fabric API for 26.3 and Java 25. The general fixes are in my Fabric guide.
Alternatives
The real The Sift arrives with Mojang’s update in 2027, for Java and Bedrock. Until then, this mod is the way to play it on 26.3. If you want new content without a whole dimension, The Shooting Star brings four weapons from space, and Waystones adds teleport stones for big worlds. Where The Sift lands among all the mods I tested: my 26.3 tier list, B tier.
Verdict
- For you if: you want to explore the new dimension now and like a ritual to get there.
- Pros: a full dimension with ten biomes, its own mobs and gear, and a portal ritual that’s fun to pull off.
- Cons: a fan interpretation, not Mojang’s design; the GeckoLib trap on Fabric; it has to be on the server too.
- Tip: back up your world before you go in, and bring a goat horn. The rest of the ritual only needs eight note blocks.

FAQ
Is The Sift in Minecraft yet?
Not officially. Mojang announced The Sift at Minecraft LIVE on September 26, 2026 as the first new dimension in over 14 years, for Java and Bedrock in 2027. Mielon’s The Sift is a fan-made mod based on the trailers, not an exact copy.
Which version of the mod works on Minecraft 26.3?
Version 1.1.2 (October 1, 2026) for Fabric. It needs Fabric API, GeckoLib and Java 25. LambDynamicLights is optional. Other files exist for Fabric 26.2, NeoForge 1.21.1 and Forge 1.20.1.
Why does Minecraft say GeckoLib is missing?
The Fabric 26.3 file lists the NeoForge build of GeckoLib (5.5.6) as its dependency. If a launcher installs dependencies automatically, you end up with the wrong file and Fabric stops with “requires version 5.5.6 or later of geckolib, which is missing”. Download the Fabric build of GeckoLib for 26.3 yourself (we used 5.5.7).
How do I open the portal to The Sift?
Find an Ancient City. In front of the big frame in the city center are eight Sonorous Deepslate. Stand in the middle and play a goat horn, and a Singer wakes the blocks with its song. Put a note block on each one, tune them to 1 to 8 with right clicks, then hit them with left clicks in the order 1, 3, 7, 6, 5, 2, 4, 8. Where each note stands doesn’t matter, only the order you play them in.
Do I need a fresh world?
The mod builds its portal into Ancient City centers when they generate. Look for a city in chunks you haven’t explored before installing the mod.
How do I close the portal again?
According to the mod’s code, playing the melody backwards (8, 4, 2, 5, 6, 7, 3, 1) closes it. I haven’t filmed that myself.
Is there a boss in The Sift?
Not in this mod. If you see a boss in other Sift videos, it comes from a different mod.
What's in The Sift?
Ten biomes on siftslate with its own sky and weather, Ichor (a liquid that gives you Regeneration), mobs like the Sifter, the Blub, the Echo Golem and the Dark Sniffer, Siftite gear as an upgrade for netherite, Charoite for the enchanting table and Rifts between The Sift and the Overworld.
