Update 7 starts Hytale’s first chapter, Chapter I: Out of the Breach. It brings a goblin faction, goblin breaches that open in your world, goblin gadgets, a new runestone ability system, and the Deepworks, Hytale’s first handcrafted dungeon with its first major multi-phase boss: the Gobliterator. Here’s everything that changed.

It starts at the Forgotten Temple

Whether you play an existing Exploration world or a new one, something stirs at the Forgotten Temple. Explore the new Goblin Lab there to start Chapter I; a Chapter screen lists your objectives and what you unlock. After that, a temporary portal appears in your world, and it arrives with some force. Breaches also start on their own after a few nights.

Through the breach: the Guttering Hollows

Step through and you land in the Guttering Hollows, an unstable fragment of Orbis the goblins have claimed, with the Void pressing in at the edges. It regenerates every time you enter, and the Void eventually pushes you back out. You can earn more time by fighting back the Void and by upgrading the Goblin Breach Console in the Goblin Lab. Inside: predators to track and trap, Void assassins, treasure chests that spring enemy waves, and puzzles. Hunts need a Voidheart.

The goblins

The goblins are completely revamped. The main types:

  • Goblin Scrapper: light melee, likes to swarm.
  • Goblin Miner: heavy melee with a powerful leap attack.
  • Goblin Guardian: heavily armored, defends with a shield.
  • Goblin Lobber: throws bombs.
  • Goblin Burner: ranged, with a flamethrower.
  • Feastmaster: an elite that charges in and calls for reinforcements.

Not every goblin wants a fight: goblins fear the Void and run from Void creatures unless they have enough friends nearby. Void creatures are now hostile toward goblins.

The Deepworks and the Gobliterator

All of Chapter I builds up to the Deepworks, Hytale’s first handcrafted dungeon. Its rooms bring goblin hordes, flames and falling debris, puzzles and checkpoints. The Elite Goblin Feastmaster blocks your path as the first boss, and at the end waits the Gobliterator, Hytale’s first major multi-phase boss fight. For an extra challenge, there’s an ominous-looking button to the left of the boss chamber entrance.

The fights run on Hytale’s encounter system, which handles phases, enemy waves and arena changes. Encounters are content rather than engine code, so modders can build their own.

Goblin gadgets

  • Rocket Boots: a double jump.
  • Hookshot and Hook Anchors: zip across the world.
  • Scrap Glider: glide, dive and climb (watch your stamina).
  • Scrap Drill: breaks a 2x2 patch of blocks, including metal blocks.
  • Spyglass: zoom in on the distance.
  • Goblin Repair Kit: repairs items without lowering their maximum durability.
  • Bangstick: a stick that goes bang when thrown.

Runestones: abilities and modifiers

Craft runestones from Runestone Shards and slot them into a Runebinder’s Lattice (one stands in the Forgotten Temple). You can equip up to two Ability Runestones; they cost mana, which regenerates on its own, and landing your weapon’s signature ability on enemies gives mana back.

  • Ability Runestones (7): Chain Hook, Charged Shot, Enrage, Fireball, Ground Slam, Imbue Poison, Wind Strike.
  • Modifier Runestones (8): Colossal, Enduring, Quickening, Rebound (projectiles bounce off enemies), Rend (bleeding), Splinter (splits projectiles), Thrift, Wither (slows the target and lowers its damage).

Combat changes

  • Sword, dagger, mace and battleaxe attacks are roughly 15% faster.
  • Crossbows hit much less hard: the Iron Crossbow combo shot drops from 27 to 13 damage.
  • Taking damage no longer interrupts eating or drinking potions, and eating slows you by 25% instead of 60%.
  • Weapons and tools last a lot longer, for example iron weapons 250 instead of 120 durability.

Everything else

  • Minigames in the main menu, available shortly after launch: Prop Hunt and Shuffle Jam with 12 microgames, solo or as a party.
  • Over 100 new cosmetics, including the Scrap Arcanist and Junk Pilot sets you unlock through Chapter I.
  • Real glass in temple, tavern and village windows, throwable barrels, new goblin blocks and lots of new music.
  • French and Spanish as new languages.
